CALEDONIA, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) — A Caledonia police officer is being hailed as a hero for running into a burning home to save a family dog.

Officer Corey Radke is a K9 handler with the Caledonia Police Department. Last week he was seen as a hero for saving a dog from a house fire on his way home from work. Officer Radke said he was on his way home from work when he saw some black smoke in the sky and decided to head that way.

“Heading home I was seeing some black smoke in the sky and I thought oh I wonder what that is and then dispatch said there is a structure fire. So that answered that questions and I said here we go,” Radke said.

The whole rescue was caught on body cam. You can see him running up to the house which at this point is fully engulfed in flames. He then kicks in the side door to check if anyone is inside and finds a dog just sitting on the couch.

After getting the dog out safely he went back to see if anyone else was inside but didn’t see anyone. Sadly the family lost their home, but they got to keep their beloved dogs and for that, they are forever grateful.

“I just held his hand and he said, 'what about our dogs, what about our dogs?' and I couldn’t give him and answer until we got here and I heard that officer Radke got Deezel out,” homeowner Jackie Dykstra said.

The Dykstra family said after watching the video, they couldn’t  believe he was brave enough to run into their home especially while off duty.

“The first time we saw it and I said the house was that on fire and you still went in. It was far worse than I imagined it to be and he still went in,” Dykstra said.

While reuniting with the family and their dogs, the two boys gave officer Radke cards they made and a LEGO squad car as a way to say thank you. The family said they will never be able to find a way to repay officer Radke for what he did that day.
