MILWAUKEE (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- Students and members of the community came together Thursday afternoon on the Marquette University campus to speak out against racism.
It is being done through an event called Mark Up Marquette. People took to the sidewalks outside the student union writing messages that condemn racism. A portion of the sidewalk is being used to write the names of more than 200 people that organizers say were victims of police violence. Those who came out say it is a chance to send a long-lasting message.
“We can protest in the street and our message lasts the second it leaves our mouth but this stays on the pavement as long as it possibly can. Until the rain comes. It can really push conversations in a positive way,” says Zak Lenski, who came out to join the demonstration.
Event co-organizer Aryana Barudin says the wanted to create a unique platform where everyone could join together.
“The reason why we originally organized this was because it was so family-friendly and inclusive. It is the epitome of a peaceful protest. This allows children to come out and engage and become a part of history,” Says Barudin.
While most participants were Marquette students, many families with children and people outside the campus community also took part.
