WISCONSIN (SPECTRUM NEWS)— The University of Wisconsin Madison launched a new app to help inform the state of Wisconsin on all things coronavirus.

Information on the coronavirus can be found almost anywhere. But the University of Wisconsin Madison wants to make sure that information is correct. Which is why the developed a new app to do just that.

“In a matter of five weeks we created an app that would normally take anywhere from nine months to a year to develop,” University of Wisconsin Madison Maier-Bascom Professor, Dhavan Shah said.

The app was created with a team of 30 to 40 volunteers from the university. In just a short period of time they created COVID-19 Wisconsin Connect. It’s an app to help connect the entire state of Wisconsin to coronavirus research, data, and information.

“It’s three different kinds of set of tools that we are building.  The one is information resources, the other is communication and the last is tools that help us connect with things in our community,” Shah said.

The app has fact checked information and even dispels misinformation that floats around on social media.

“We are trying to provide important correctives by tracking social media and then including those posted updates of what are some of the most dangerous forms of misinformation are right now,” Shah said.

The goal is to reach as many wisconsinites as possible to better inform and help curb the spread.

“Our goal is to deliver to all the different communities in the state especially the higher risk communities or those who are immunocompromised or may have underlying health conditions, but also those communities that may be experiencing COVID-19 at higher rates,” Shah said.

The app is free to everyone and will be available on all platforms.
