MILWAUKEE — Mandated by state law in Wisconsin and ahead of a winter in which most energy analysts anticipate significantly higher utility bills than in 2021, the annual moratorium on service interruptions in Wisconsin is set to go into effect Tuesday.
"This moratorium takes place every year," Brad Rose with the Public Service Commission said. "It's not something that's unique, and with the energy assistance available to those customers that will help get caught up... It'll help [them] to manage those higher bills."
Set to run through April 15, 2023, the disconnection moratorium will provide many Wisconsinites relief in knowing their service won't be cut.
While service won't be cut, homeowners will still be responsible for paying their bill in full, though Rose said there's no shortage of programs to help Wisconsinites get caught up.
"The most important thing is for customers to contact their utilities to look into setting up a payment plan or payment arrangement," Rose added. "A lot of utilities are flexible with customers, especially this time of year, where the customer can make a down payment on a portion of their bill and then set the rest of the remaining bill on installments."
