MILWAUKEE — As Friday marked National POW/MIA Recognition Day, a team from Wisconsin continues to work to find missing service members and bring their remains home.

"It's a lengthy process. There's a long-term investigation regarding the cases we're investigating which then transitions to scouting missions," said Charles Konsitzke, team lead for the University of Wisconsin Missing in Action Recovery and Identification Project. "[It then] transitions into recovery missions, which sounds really short but it can take [up to] four years."

As of Friday, the UW MIA RIP has helped to recover the remains of three service members from Wisconsin, and they continue to work on bringing a fourth service member’s remains back to the Badger State.

There are roughly 12,000 service members from Wisconsin alone who are currently MIA.

“It’s quite the process and requires a large team of individuals investigating along with people in the field,” Konsitzke added. “Our last team just returned from Belgium and we had roughly 18 people in the field at that point.”
