MILWAUKEE, Wisc., (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- Make sure your fun night doesn't turn into a hospital night stay, this holiday weekend.

Fireworks are illegal in the City of Milwaukee. Milwaukee Police Department and Milwaukee County Sherrif's Office will enforce the fireworks ban, even on the Fourth of July.

If you violate the law and do set off fireworks, sell them or discharge them, you can face a fine of up to $1,000.

“Fireworks can cause serious injuries, including burns, contusions, lacerations, and head and eye wounds, with children ages 5 to 9 facing the highest risk of injury. According to the National Fire Protection Association, based on the amount of time and quantities in use, fireworks pose a higher risk of death than any other consumer product,” Alderman Michael Murphy says.

While Milwaukee is urging the community to leave lighting up the sky to the pros, it's no secret that accidents can happen to anyone.

Last year in Waukesha, three Spielbauer Fireworks Inc. employees were injured while working on a professional show. Fireworks went off unintentionally during a show and the three injured pros were treated at the scene.

But it's not just the pros who need to be aware of the dangers fireworks can cause. Every year, the city estimates that more than 9,000 people visit hospital emergency rooms to seek treatment from firework fun gone wrong.

“Fireworks can cause fear and significant anxiety in pets and small children, and they can also trigger frightening memories and flashbacks for some military veterans who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),” says Cavalier Johnson, common council's president. “Not to mention, fireworks accidents are common, especially for children between the ages of 5 and 9, and can result in serious injuries, such as burns, contusions, lacerations, and head and eye wounds.”

If you are planning a firework-filled night in a city where they are legal, follow these top safety tips:

“Fireworks-related injuries and damage are 100% preventable, and I am asking our residents to celebrate safely this summer and to leave the fireworks to the professionals who are trained in their handling. Please don’t take the chance of having your party turn from the fun zone to the fire zone,” Murphy says.
