OHIO — Cleveland and Akron are preparing for freezing temperatures to hit Ohio next week and are activating warming centers for people to stay out of the cold.

Cleveland announced that its warming centers would be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. from Monday, Feb. 17 through Thursday, Feb. 20.

The city will provide transportation to a nearby men's or women's shelter that provides overnight shelter for those who need it.

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik said hours will be extended at Summit Lake Community Center located at 380 W Crosier St. on Monday, Feb. 17 and Tuesday, Feb. 18. The center will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The city said all other city community centers will be closed Monday, but reopen for normal business hours on Tuesday.

Officials said the city will monitor temperatures and extend center hours as necessary, but until otherwise stated normal business hours will resume on Wednesday. 

Akron's emergency overnight shelter at 111 East Voris St. will open at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14. The hours for the shelter are 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. through Tuesday, Feb. 18.
