WASHINGTON — Gov. Andy Beshear, D-Ky., who in recent weeks was under consideration as a possible running mate for Vice President Kamala Harris, will play a key role in the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

What You Need To Know

  • Gov. Andy Beshear and Rep. Morgan McGarvey are among those speaking in support of Vice President Kamala Harris this week

  • The DNC is underway at the United Center in Chicago

  • Beshear has a primetime speaking slot Monday, Aug. 19

  • McGarvey spoke to a group about small businesses

Ahead of a primetime slot on night 1 of the convention, Beshear posted a video promising a message of “hope, freedom and unity” in support of Harris and vice presidential candidate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Beshear, who joined auto workers on the picket line last year, also took part in a meeting on labor.

“We need to prove to this country, when you oppose labor unions, when you oppose our educators and public education, you will lose,” Beshear said. “I'm proud to be that pro-union, pro-public education governor.”

Also attending the DNC is Rep. Morgan McGarvey, D-Louisville, Kentucky’s lone Democrat in Congress.

“This is a really historic opportunity for Democrats to come together and I think, combat the message of hatred and division that we have seen from Donald Trump and his MAGA extremists,” McGarvey told Spectrum News last week.

McGarvey, who serves on the House small business committee, spoke at a DNC meeting on the topic.

“Let's talk about making sure that people who are differently abled, people with disabilities are also getting the shot to be entrepreneurs,” McGarvey said.

Earlier this year, the House passed McGarvey’s bill that would require the Small Business Administration to report to Congress on the challenges and needs of entrepreneurs with a disability.

Spectrum News will have live coverage of the DNC all week.
