CAMDEN, Ohio — For the first time, the Preble Shawnee High School boys’ basketball team has reached the OHSAA state tournament. They’re the underdogs, going up against powerhouse Lutheran East, but their hometown businesses and one local pastor has plenty of faith in the team.

At almost every high school basketball game, and on almost every Sunday, you’ll find Pastor Greg Jackson.

“I grew up playing,” he said. “Some of the members at our church were at the game I played 43 years ago.”

It’s the reason, this week, he has a different kind of message.

“First Samuel:17 is the story of David and Goliath, and we’re David and we’re playing Goliath,” said Jackson.

His church, First Baptist Southern, is in small-town Camden, home to the Preble Shawnee High School boys’ basketball team. For the first time, the Arrows have made it to the state championship weekend.

“We’re gonna give the one of these (stones) it’s just symbolic of what it means to bring your stone to the fight,” said Jackson.

He’s not the only one hoping for a fighting chance.

Just outside of the church, you’ll find reminders and messages.

High school senior Mallory Rader helped to put up signs cheering on the home team at The Depot restaurant where she works.

“I’m very proud of them and their accomplishments and what they’ve done to get there,” said Rader.

Other area businesses donated food for a team good luck dinner back at that church where they’re holding on to hope for a win.

“Ball players and cheerleaders, they’re gonna bring it,” said Jackson.
