PORTAGE COUNTY, Ohio — Officials said a helicopter crash in Portage County Friday morning has shifted from a rescue to a recovery mission.
The crash happened at the Mogadore Reservoir, just east of the community of Mogadore. At a an impromptu press conference Friday morning, Suffield Township Fire Chief Bob Rasnick said they were notified of the crash at 7:11 a.m.
They have recovered one body. Officials have identified 52-year old Anthony Jones as the only person who died in the crash.
Rasnick said the helicopter hit Ohio Edison high-tension wires and crashed into the water. They had witnesses in a boat who saw the crash. The power line that was hit does not contain power. The crash tripped some circuits, and officials are working to ensure everything stays safe.
He confirmed there was some leakage from the helicopter, but it has been isolated to protect the area’s water. He said there is no danger of it running off and killing wildlife.
They are still waiting on the NTSB and FAA to arrive for an assessment, which is when the scene will be turned over to them.
The sherrif's office said Sunnybrook Road is closed between Martin Road and Saxe Road and asked the public to avoid the area.
The Portage County Sheriff's Office said deputies, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and other officials responded to the scene.
