PASADENA, Calif. — Pasadena Unified School District announced Friday that the district has filed a lawsuit against Southern California Edison for damages that occurred during the Eaton Fire in January.
According to a news release, PUSD is seeking compensation for extensive damage to school facilities within the district and disruption of operations caused by the fire that began on Jan. 7.
“The destruction of multiple schools and educational facilities has created an immense burden on students, families, and the entire educational community,” said John Fiske, a shareholder at Baron & Budd P.C., outside counsel representing the District. “This lawsuit seeks fair compensation to recover the taxpayer resources and district property lost as a result of this devastating fire,” the district said in a news release.
The filing details extensive damage to several key educational facilities according to the statement released. Campuses affected by the fire included Franklin Elementary School, Eliot Arts Magnet Middle School, the Edison campus housing Odyssey Charter School, the Loma Alta campus housing Pasadena Rosebud Academy and Oak Knoll Montessori School and the Noyes campus housing Aveson School of Leaders.
The release stated that the complaint includes claims for “inverse condemnation, negligence, trespass, nuisance, premises liability, and violations of Public Utilities and Health & Safety Codes.”
The complaint addresses both fire damage and subsequent costs that occurred following the fire.
A spokesperson for SCE responded in a statement to Spectrum News regarding the lawsuit.
“The Eaton Fire has been heartbreaking for the Altadena community. We are reviewing this lawsuit and will respond through the legal process,” Diane Castro said in the statement.
The devastating Eaton Fire claimed 17 lives across the area, burned more than 17,000 acres and destroyed five schools in the PUSD.
PUSD joins LA County, the cities of Pasadena and Sierra Madre, in the list of lawsuits against SCE following the fire.
