We're pretty quickly seeing temperatures going from a pattern of significantly below average to numbers that are much closer to record highs than our averages for this point in the season.

What You Need To Know

  • Upper 80s are in the forecast for the first time this season

  • A few 90-degree readings are possible late week

  • While seeing 90s would be a bit early for this point in May, we wouldn't be too far ahead of normal

We're just off a stretch of chilly weather that saw highs only in the 60s from May 5 all the way to the 13th, not to mention lows in the 30s and 40s. So, talking about highs near 90 might be a bit of a shock to the system.

Average highs for mid-May across the state are in the mid-70s, but now we've flipped the script and changed over to a pattern of well above average temperatures for the next week, at least.

How does this compare to average?

Highs near 90 degrees are back in the forecast for much of Ohio. So, it is normal to see 90s this early in the year?

The short answer is that while it is a bit early, we're only running a couple weeks ahead of average. Of the five large cities in Ohio (Cleveland, Toledo, Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati), the average first day we see 90 degrees is between June 8-14.

Upper 80s are likely in several spots, and when forecasts are near records already, even a little extra sun during the morning can cause a bump of a degree or two, so a couple of 90-degree days are possible in a few of our major cities.

Even if we were to hit 90 at any location, (which still isn't a guarantee and we should mainly stay in the upper 80s) it wouldn't be the earliest 90-degree days on record, either. Of those five cities, only Toledo hasn't seen a 90-degree day during the first week of May.

Most of our daily record high temperatures this week also don't look to be in jeopardy, although we could see a tie or two.

Oh, and since you're probably asking when we might see more seasonable temperatures return, it looks like we'll see overall cooler numbers in the forecast by the middle of next week.
