A fall heatwave in the Ohio valley melted daily record high temperatures in cities across the state. Temperatures soared 15 to 20 degrees above average, and some days we reached new record highs!
Most cities in Ohio saw at least one new daily record high over four days.
It is hard to believe how warm it has been in northeast Ohio in early November. Typically it is in the upper to mid-50s, yet some days have flirted near 80 degrees in Cleveland.
We broke the record for high temperatures three days in a row. November 8-10, Cleveland airport reached warm highs and beat the previous records.
The warmest November temperature ever recorded in Cleveland was set back in 1950 on November 1 at 82 degrees!
For four days in a row, Toledo either tied or broke the daily record high. Temperatures were about 15 to 20 degrees above the average.
Toledo also tied the warmest November temperature, previously set on November 4, 2003 and November 1, 1950. On November 9th at the Toledo airport, the high was 80 and tied the record.
Usually, Dayton’s average high in November is around the low 60s to the upper 50s. Well, just like everyone else in the state, highs were above normal.
Starting November 7th, temperatures climbed into the 70s and continued to warm for the next several days.
Dayton even saw the warmest November temperature on record. For the first time, Dayton reached 80 degrees on November 8th. The second warmest temperature in November was 79. It happened on November 1, 2016 and November 9, 1975.
Columbus was flirting near record-high temperatures for several days and even set a few new records during the warm wave.
Columbus has reached 80 degrees twice in past years, November 1, 2016 and November 3, 1987.
November averages in Cincinnati typically range from the low 60s to upper 50s, but it has been 15 to almost 20 degrees warmer than that during this second summer.
Cincinnati flirted near 80 degrees but didn’t quite reach the mark. The warmest November temperature was set back on November 1, 2016, at 82 degrees.
It is also the eighth time Cincinnati has reached 80+ degrees on record in November.
According to the American Meteorological Society, a second summer is a term describing a warm spell during the fall months.
Other people refer to it as the "last blast" of warmth before old man winter arrives!
Weather folklore states that the term dates back to times when the warmer fall weather would entice hunters and gathers before the cold of winter would set in.
November started warm, but how will it finish?
According to the latest Climate Prediction Center Forecast, the Ohio valley, along with the eastern and middle half of the U.S., is likely to continue the warmer-than-average temperatures.
There will be cooler spells, and temperatures will fluctuate, but the temperature trend keeps November warm, overall.
