As we wrap up July and kick-start the last full month of summer, many Ohioans will enjoy spending time at the ‘closest’ local beach this August! The Great Lakes are always a popular spot for summer fun.

With the help of July’s hot temperatures, the lake waters have warmed.

When checking satellite-derived water temperatures from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory and RealEarth data, the current Lake Erie water temperatures range from the 70s and even low 80s in a few isolated spots.

If you are jumping in this weekend, it’s going to feel like a bath-tub. The average Lake Erie temperature near Cleveland’s metro is around 74 degrees. The temperature will usually peak around mid-August at 75 degrees.

According the National Weather Service in Cleveland, Lake Erie, on average, starts cooling off significantly from early October to early November.  This will cause average lake temperatures to frop from 65 degrees to 56 degrees within one month, and temperatures will continually fall and will typically freeze by winter.

Before long, we’ll be tracking lake-effect snow, so until then, safely enjoy Lake Erie and the surrounding lake waters!
