Ohio State (1-1) never led the game it was favored the win on Saturday by 14 1/2 points despite gaudy numbers from freshman quarterback C.J. Stroud.

Its front seven struggled to control the edge, get after Ducks quarterback Anthony Brown in front and contain C.J. Verdell, who ran for 161 yards and had three touchdowns.

The Buckeyes had a chance to tie it late after pulling within a touchdown with 7:55 left. But when they got the ball again, Stroud, who passed for 472 yards and three touchdowns, took his first sack of the day. Then, he was intercepted by Verone McKinley III on a desperation sideline pass on third-and-18 at the Oregon 35 with 2:50 to go -- all in front of a stunned crowd of more than 100,000.

The Ducks’ victory over Ohio State earned them a promotion from No. 12 to No. 4.

The Ducks now have their highest ranking since they finished the 2014 season No. 2 as the national runner-up to Ohio State.

Cincinnati slid from No. 7 to No. 8 in the poll despite routing Murray State 42-7.

The Bearcats were heavy favorites coming in on Saturday, but the Racers outgained them 190-83 in the first half and led 7-0 in the second quarter. The score was tied at halftime before the Bearcats (2-0) scored touchdowns on four of their first five possessions in the second half.

Alabama remained No. 1 in the AP Top 25, which is presented by Regions Bank. The Crimson Tide received 60 of the 63 first-place votes. Georgia, which picked up the other three first-place votes, stayed at No. 2.

Ohio State plays Tulsa at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Cincinnati plays Indiana at noon on Saturday.
