WAYNE COUNTY, Ohio — A small township north of Wooster announced on social media Wednesday that it plans to decommission three tornado sirens.

Canaan Township officials said the three sirens, which are on W. Britton Road, E. Steiner Road and W. Steiner Road, need extensive maintenance and require high costs for repairs. Because of this, as well as how old the sirens are and the unreliability of them, officials decided to not keep them in operation.

Canaan Township is urging residents to have other forms of contact to receive important weather information, including to subscribing to alerts from local news channels, tuning into the NOAA radio or downloading emergency alert apps on phones.

Canaan Township officials added that the Village of Creston, which is about 7 minutes north of Canaan, maintains its tornado siren on S. Main Street.
