OHIO — The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency announced Wednesday it is awarding more than $1.9 million to 32 communities to help waterways stay safe from salt contamination.

What You Need To Know

  • The funds can be used for facility and equipment upgrades

  • The goal is to prevent salt contamination in Ohio's waterways

  • Thirty-two communities in 22 counties are receiving the funds

The grants are through Gov. Mike DeWine's H2Ohio initiative.

“H2Ohio continues to help communities better protect our water,” DeWine, R-Ohio, said. “All over Ohio we are assisting local communities with needed equipment and storage options that will reduce the risk of road salt contaminating our waterways.”

The funds will be used for equipment and storage facility upgrades to help reduce over-application of de-icing materials, which will help the health of Ohio waterways.

The announcement was made in Eaton on Wednesday by Ohio EPA Director Anne Vogel. Eaton is one of 32 communities receiving the funding, and the city plans to use the funds to upgrade the last of its seven trucks with salt spread control systems.

Ohio EPA Director Anne Vogel made the announcement Wednesday in Eaton. The city is receiving about $50,000 and is one of 32 communities being awarded funding.

“We’re grateful to the Ohio EPA for helping make this equipment upgrade possible,” Eaton Mayor Matt Venable said. “The new salt control system will not only improve road safety during winter weather but also enhance operator effectiveness and reduce chloride pollution in our waterways—all while being a smart investment that protects taxpayer dollars.”
