Columbia, S.C. — Dr. Edward Simmer is under consideration to become the first permanent Director of the South Carolina Department of Public Health. Simmer, who was nominated by Governor Henry McMaster, spoke before the Senate’s Medical Affairs Committee Thursday morning.
This comes as the GOP controlled legislature voiced concerns over McMaster’s nomination, pointing to some of Simmer’s previous decisions while he was the Director of the State’s Department of Health and Environmental Control.
“I believe that decisions about treatment for COVID-19 or any other condition should be made between the patient and the physician after the patient gives informed consent," Said Simmer.
Simmer says his record serving the Palmetto State and as a former Navy Doctor proves his commitment to the people.
“Enemy of medical freedom, health czar, not a real doctor, evil. These are just a few examples of what has been said about me. Nothing could be further from the truth.” Simmer stated.
Simmer also went on to say that those who knowingly spread misinformation should take ownership of their actions.
During his opening statement, Simmer told the Senate committee, “I am not intimidated. I am not scared. No threats, no lies on social media, no smear campaign from cowards, many of whom hide behind anonymous letters and false social media identities, will ever deter me from continuing to serve the people of south Carolina to the very best of my ability.”
According to Simmer, South Carolina currently ranks in the lower 30s for overall health.
“Working together, there is nothing we cannot do!” Simmer stated, “If you want a director who supports medical freedom, opposes COVID-like shutdowns, puts the people of his agency first, and dedicates himself to improving the health of every person and every community in South Carolina, I am that director."
