A person was shot by police overnight during a traffic stop in south Charlotte.

The shooting happened about 2 a.m. along the 7000 block of South Boulevard.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers said the person was finally pulled over after “multiple traffic stop attempts.” It was then that police said the person got out of the vehicle and “officers perceived an imminent deadly threat.”

At least one officer fired a shot, police said, hitting the person. A firearm belonging to the person was recovered at the scene, according to authorities.

Officers gave aid to the person until Medic arrived and transported them to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. No other information on the person has been released.

Though multiple officers were also taken to the hospital for precautionary measures, police said “no officers were struck with gunfire or injured to our knowledge.”

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation will lead the investigation into the shooting. CMPD said the officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave and the Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate but parallel investigation, which is standard protocol.
