Most evacuation orders were lifted in Polk County as crews make progress battling a wildfire.

The fire, along Highway 176 between Tryon and Saluda, was 593 acres with 63% containment as of Monday evening.

"All evacuations have been lifted except for 3000 to 3910 Hwy 176," Polk County Emergency Management/Fire Marshal posted.

"North Carolina Forest Service conducted back burns in the areas of Bear Creek Rd, Hanging Rock Rd, Ocean View Ln, and on 176 near Tau Rock Vineyard Ln," according to the statement posted to Facebook. Backburning is a technique firefighters use to build containment lines, and officials continued these operations Monday to protect homes in the area.

The brush fire began Saturday, and residents in the area were urged to evacuate. Dry and breezy conditions over the weekend created a high fire risk for much of the state, but the winds weakened Monday.

Wild fires are also burning along South Carolina's coast in the Myrtle Beach area. Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency on Sunday to support the wildfire response effort, and a statewide burning ban was issued.

Firefighters made progress containing a fire in Carolina Forest, an S.C. area just outside of the tourist destination of the City of Myrtle Beach, officials said. Several neighborhoods were evacuated, and video showed people running through smoke-filled streets before conditions improved.
