TEXAS — In response to the approaching winter weather, cities across Texas are activating their cold weather shelters.

Parts of the state can expect winter precipitation, with less than an inch of snow likely across central Texas and a possible wintry mix as far south as the coast.

Austin

Overnight cold weather shelters in Austin will open on Jan. 18. Shelters will remain open nightly until Jan. 22, with a potential extension.

People sheltered Sunday night can stay through the day on Jan. 20.

Daily shelter registration is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at One Texas Center (505 Barton Springs Road).

One Texas Center is accessible via bus routes: 1, 7, 10, 20, 30, 105, 142 and 801.

The city does not list the locations of the cold weather shelters to manage limits and privacy concerns. However, those who go to One Texas Center to register will be able to find out where the shelters are located.

Dallas

The Salvation Army will open multiple shelters in the metroplex.

In Arlington, the shelter is located at 712 W. Abram St.

In Denton, the shelter is located at 1508 E. McKinney St.

In Garland, there will be a shelter open at 451 West Avenue D.

In Lewisville, it will be located at 880 Fox Ave.

In downtown Dallas, the shelter will be located at 5302 Harry Hines Blvd.

San Antonio

City libraries, senior centers and community centers are open during normal hours to provide warmth to residents in need. The city may extend resilience hub hours if the weather turns hazardous.

Houston

The city of Houston has numerous shelters open for the approaching cold weather.

During the day, those seeking relief from the winter weather can go to the Beacon John S. Dunn Outreach Center, located at 1212 Prairie St.

An emergency shelter for men is located at Star of Hope Men’s Development Center, 1811 Ruiz St.

An emergency shelter for women and families is located at Star of Hope - Women and Family Development Center, 2575 Reed Road and Salvation Army Jones Family Residence, 1603 McGowen St.

An emergency shelter for youth (18-25) is located at Covenant House Texas, 3412 Beulah St.
