OHIO — Drivers with electric vehicles will be pleased as more charging options pop up around the state in time to use for holiday travel.

The Ohio Department of Transportaion's DriveOhio announced that seven new EV charging stations have opened in recent weeks. In total, the state has 13 new stations since this time last year with six more locations under construction that are expected to be functional before the end of the year.

Each of the stations has multiple ports for simultaneous charging of at least four vehicles, equipped with 150 kilowatts of power per port which can charge most EVs in about 30 minutes.

"Opening these charging stations along our interstates provides EV travelers with increased fueling options that are convenient and reliable this holiday season and beyond," said ODOT Director Pamela Boratyn in a news release.

By opening these stations along interstates, officials said that drivers will then have access to restrooms and amenities while their vehicles charge.

“Through our outreach, we know that availability is a concern for many drivers, so continuing to implement more fast-charging options is key to addressing our customers' needs,” said Preeti Choudhary, DriveOhio executive director, in a news release.

Ohio has led the country in developing EV fast-chargers along interstates and major state routes since the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program began in 2022. Almost half of the program funded stations are operating in Ohio.

DriveOhio has awarded more than $30 million for 42 stations, to be matched with nearly $10 million from selected winners. ODOT received 128 proposals for the next round of stations, set to be reviewed in the future.
