OHIO — Through March 31, 2025, Ohioans who meet eligibility requirements can receive one-time assistance with their energy bills this winter.
The funding is through the Ohio Department of Development’s Home Energy Assistance Winter Crisis Program. The program aims to assist those who face service disconnection, those who need to establish new service and households with a Percentage of Income Payment Plan default.
Eligible households must have 25% or less of bulk fuel in their tank to maintain service. Additionally, they must have a gross income at or below 175% the federal poverty level. For example, for a family of four to qualify, they must have a gross income of $54,600.
“When temperatures drop this winter, no one should have to worry about if they can afford to keep their home warm,” said Lydia Mihalik, director of the Department of Development, in a release. “Every year, this program serves as a lifeline for thousands of Ohioans, ensuring they can stay safe and comfortable during our coldest months.”
Last year, the Winter Crisis Program helped more than 77,000 Ohio households, which totaled to $23.5 million in benefits, according to the Ohio Department of Development.
The application can be found online by clicking here, but Ohioans need to schedule an appointment with their local energy assistance provider to complete it.
Residents must bring the following documents to the appointment:
- If available, copies of their most recent energy bills
- A list of all household members and proof of income for the last 30 days or 12 months for each member
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency for all household members
- Proof of disability if needed
