COLUMBUS, Ohio — The second day of jury deliberation is complete in the Adam Coy murder trial, and there's still no verdict.

What You Need To Know

  • Two days of jury deliberations for the Adam Coy murder trial is still no verdict

  • The jury deliberated for a total of 12 hours between Thursday and Friday

  • The jury is set to return Monday at 9:15am to continue deliberating

The jury is considering three separate charges against the former Columbus police officer who shot and killed Andre Hill — an unarmed Black man — nearly four years ago.

The judge dismissed the jury around 4 p.m. Friday evening.

With no inclination as to when they will reach a verdict, the jury deliberated for about seven hours on Friday. When added to the time they took Thursday, it’s up to about 12 hours of deliberation so far.

Now we’ll have to wait until at least Monday before the light turns green, indicating that they’ve reached a verdict. Coy is charged with murder, reckless homicide and felonious assault charges.

Case Western Reserve University School of Law Professor of Practice Michael Benza said jury deliberations for a case like this could take a long time because they need to decide if Coy was justified for shooting and killing Andre Hill.

“I would imagine that what most of the jurors are going to be struggling with to reach their verdict is separating out their idea about was the officer, in fact, justified in using lethal force,” Benza said.

The jury is set to return at 9:15 a.m. Monday to continue deliberating.
