COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Adam Coy murder trial continued Wednesday at the Franklin County Common Pleas courthouse.

What You Need To Know

  • The jury takes the case in the Adam Coy murder trial and will begin to deliberate the fate of the former Columbus police officer who shot and killed Andre Hill in 2020

  • Coy is charged with murder, reckless homicide and felonious assault charges

  • The prosecution and defense presented contradictory closing arguments to the jury

Following a week and a half of witness testimonies and presentation of all evidence, the jury will start deliberating the case on Thursday morning.

Prosecutors used their closing arguments to recount the night of the shooting and remind jurors of what witnesses testified about how the night played out. They differentiated between a mistake doesn’t and an accident saying Coy knew he was in the wrong when he shot hill.

“I got to find what I missed moments after the shooting. That’s when this started, ladies and gentlemen. Moments after the shooting. He said, Oh, I know I can’t just shoot an unarmed man for no reason walking out of the garage. So what are the things I can point to justify that?” said prosecuting attorney, Anthony Pierson.

Contradicting everything the prosecution argued — the defense made sure to mention Coy wasn’t reckless and how his perception that night was in the eyes of a reasonable police officer. Heavily relying on Coy’s testimony, the defense told the jury that the prosecution’s argument is a desperate theory that doesn’t make sense.

“And the worst thing, ladies and gentlemen, would you ever turn your body camera on if you lied about this from the get go? No,” said defense attorney, Mark Collins.

Before closing arguments, the rebuttal witness, Seth Stoughton, testified for almost three hours on behalf of the prosecution. Sharing his expertise on policing specifically when it comes to the use of deadly force and threats. Stoughton testified that he didn’t agree with Coy’s actions the night of the shooting based on his analysis of the case.

Again, Coy is charged with murder, reckless homicide and felonious assault charges which the jury is expected to begin deliberating Thursday morning.
