COLUMBUS, Ohio — The jury selection process for a murder trial of this magnitude is anything but easy.

What You Need To Know

  • Jury selection for the Adam Coy murder trial began Monday, Oct. 21

  • Adam Coy is a former Columbus police officer who shot and killed Andre Hill in his garage responding to a noise complaint in 2020

  • Coy is charged with murder, reckless homicide and felonious assault

Attorneys from both sides peppered potential jurors with questions ranging from impartiality, to how much they consume the news and the amount of times they watched the body cam footage that was made public.

Dozens of jurors were questioned Monday based off a questionnaire they previously filled out. Both the prosecution and the defense focused their questions around potential jurors ability to focus on the facts and evidence presented in the courtroom and to not consume any media pertaining to the case during this time.

The prosecuting attorneys are Anthony Pierson and Renee Amlin, while Mark Collins and Kaitlyn Stephens are representing Adam Coy, the former Columbus police officer who shot and killed Andre Hill in 2020 in his garage while responding to a noise complaint.

Collins has experience representing former law enforcement officers on trial, most recently he served as Jason Meade’s attorney last winter.

Coy is being charged with murder, reckless homicide and felonious assault. The trial was postponed because Coy was going through cancer treatments. The jury selection process is expected to be completed by tomorrow afternoon. The whole trial is expected to take about two weeks.
