OHIO — The state you live in could affect how long you live, a recent report from the Centers from Disease Control and Prevention shows. 

As for the Buckeye State, it has one of the lowest life expectancy rates in the nation.

  • Ohio came in 40th place out of all 50 states and the District of Columbia

  • The report states Ohioans have a life expectancy of 74.5 years on average. 

  • Ohio's life expectancy is also lower than the national life expectancy, which is 76.4 years.

The report from the CDC compiles the latest death data of each state from 2021 and also looks at Census and Medicare data. Combining those three factors, Ohio came in 40th place out of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The report states Ohioans have a life expectancy of 74.5 years on average. 

Compared to last year's report, it's a drop from the 2019-2020 life expectancy of 75.3 years for Ohio.

However, female Ohioans have a much longer expectancy of 77.1 years, compared to men, which have a 71.7-year life expectancy. 

Ohio's life expectancy is also lower than the national life expectancy, which is 76.4 years.

According to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, there are many factors that could affect life expectancy. Those include level of education, housing opportunities, employment, access to health care, food insecurity and more. 

Hawaii had the highest life expectancy of 79.9 years, and Mississippi had the lowest with 70.9 years.
