AKRON, Ohio — Akron Public Schools is working with Templeton Transportation LLC as part of its plan to provide 1,200 students with rides to school as classes are set to start.

A press release from the district states that they have 112 of their own independent contract drivers and that Templeton Transportation serves as a backup. More independent drivers are needed, and the district says they are working to fill those gaps. Last year, they had 143 drivers.

“The plan focuses on students requiring van transportation, including those with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and children experiencing housing instability,” the release reads.

The district also said that, by prioritizing their independent drivers where they can, they are lowering costs of the service. This year, they expecting it will cost around $4.1 million, compared to $7 million last year.

“This plan demonstrates the district's commitment to ensuring all students have access to education, while also managing resources efficiently,” the release reads.
