COLUMBUS, Ohio — Three Columbus police officers are recovering after being stabbed while responding to a domestic violence call Thursday, officials said.

According to Columbus Police, officers were dispatched to the 800 block of Cherryberry Drive at 4:24 p.m. 

Police said the incident escalated into a barricade scene ending with three officers stabbed and at least one officer discharging a firearm. Police said the suspect was shot and pronounced dead on the scene at approximately 9:45 p.m.

 

The Franklin County coronor identified the suspect as Benjamin Wheeler, 40.

Police have not yet provided more details on the incident.

Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge #9 President Brian Steel said the three officers faced non-life-threatening injuries.

Steel said two of the officers were recovering at home while the third remained in the hospital. It is anticipated they will be released today.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident.

Mayor Andrew Ginther released a statement that he was praying for the injured officers.

“Our officers risk their lives every day to keep us safe. Last night was a reminder of the dangers they face simply doing their jobs. I am grateful beyond words to share that all three of our injured officers are expected to recover," said Public Safety Director Kate Pishotti in a statement. "Please join me in praying for them and their families, and condemning violence against our brave peacekeepers.”
