AVON LAKE, Ohio — Portions of the historic Avon Lake power plant along Lake Road will soon be imploded, and officials are urging the public to stay away when it happens.
For safety concerns, the City of Avon Lake and the Avon Lake Environmental Redevelopment Group — which is responsible for the power plant demolition — are not releasing the date of the implosions.
Among the portions slated to come down is the boiler building, officials said. The precipitator and smokestack will be imploded at a later date due to concerns that the explosion could damage a nearby smokestack.
Officials said residents will receive a notification one week in advance, and the city will send out a 30-minute warning of the exact implosion time through the Alert Avon Lake notification system.
Additionally, there will be a 1,200-foot exclusion zone for safety because a few homes are in that area.
