COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium have confirmed on their social media that Bruce, a bat-eared fox, has died.

“Our dedicated Conservation Medicine team, alongside the Animal Care team, worked diligently to manage Bruce's long-term health issues,” they posted. “Despite their best efforts, recent bloodwork during a routine recheck exam showed a decline in his condition. After realizing that continued medical management was no longer possible, the care teams made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him.”

Bruce also went by the nicknames Brucie, Boots, Boy and Brother, according to the zoo, and was originally named after Bruce Wayne.

He had been a part of Jack Hanna’s Animal Encounters Village in the Adventure Cove.

"Bruce's legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of meeting him," the zoo wrote in their post. "He was a friend, an ambassador, and a joy to be around. We will miss you dearly, Bruce."
