CINCINNATI — Cincinnati police released the names of three victims involved in the shooting near University of Cincinnati campus early Monday.

In previous reports the department mentioned five victims; however, in a recent news release, police said the fifth victim who self-transported with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound was found to not be related to the incident.

"In total, the shooting incident that took place on University Avenue had a total of four victims," the release stated.

Police who were in the area heard multiple gunshots Monday and then found four males who had been shot on a street about a half-mile from the campus, said Cincinnati police Capt. Mark Burns.

The university’s public safety department posted on the social platform X that police were responding to an emergency shortly before 3 a.m. The department later posted it was a shooting and said: “Be observant/take action as needed.”

About an hour later, the department issued an “all clear” message and said “police will maintain heavy presence.”

Police found several guns at the scene, Burns said. One of the two people taken into custody ran into a home with a gun and eventually came back out voluntarily after a brief standoff, he said.

The Cincinnati Fire Department responded and began life-saving measures; however Shawn McDaniel, 45, was pronounced dead on scene. His son, Shawn McDaniel Jr., 22, was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Laurenz Nixon, 21, was also transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he also succumbed to his injuries.

The fourth victim was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and is in serious but stable condition.
