Police identified the gunman as 48-year-old Juan Mack, who stabbed a woman, took off and ended up in front of the crowded music hall carrying a gun.

Friday, Theetge laid out the evidence, saying officers tried commands and fired a non-lethal foam round, but when the gunman lifted his arm, police used deadly force, and the chief said it might have saved lives.

“This had all the makings of a catastrophic incident. You saw the number of people that were out and about, and that was just what was in camera's view. There were many many more people outside of the view, the tactics — I not only look for the officers' actions, I look at tactics, sound tactics on this, sound tactics," Theetge.

The chief said four unnamed officers fired shots at Mack, the gunman. The chief said he was carrying a gun loaded with 14 rounds.

The chief said the woman he stabbed is still in critical condition. No one else was hurt.
