CLEVELAND — Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb was in a accident Thursday morning at the intersection of East 12th and Superior while in a Division of Police vehicle.
A statement from Cleveland Police Chief Annie Todd states that the driver of the vehicle, an officer, “was engaged in emergency response driving” at the time.
“Preliminary information indicates that the lights were activated outside of the emergency response driving policy,” her statement reads.
She states that the police are still investigating and have begun “an internal review of potential policy violations,” for which the range in punishment could include a verbal warning all the way to a three-day suspension.
The definition of emergency response driving, as per the department policy is "the operation of a law enforcement vehicle utilizing emergency lights and siren in order to safely and quickly respond to and arrive at the scene of an emergency incident."
In a statement from the city, it was confirmed that the all parties involved were fine and that the mayor and his driver had been taken to the hospital as a precaution.
