WASHINGTON, D.C. — Those who received any reimbursement or payment from Norfolk Southern following the train derailment in East Palestine will not have to pay taxes on most of them, according to an announcement from U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio.

According to the release from Brown’s office, the payments have now been categorized as for disaster relief by the IRS and Treasury Department, “ excluding them from taxable income.”

That which are tax-exempt include inconvenience payments from the company and any reimbursement related to relocating, home repair, medical expenses and replaced personal property.

“We took on the IRS and now East Palestine residents will not have to pay tax on assistance they received from Norfolk Southern,” Brown said in the release. “This is a long overdue step – the people of East Palestine should never have had to pay taxes on assistance they needed in the wake of the train derailment.”
