CUYAHOGA HEIGHTS, Ohio — Jacob Derbin, the 23-year-old who was shot and killed while in the line of duty last Saturday, was honored by his high school Alma mater, Cuyahoga Heights High School, with a candlelight vigil on Thursday.
Hundreds of community members came out to honor him and shared stories about Derbin. Al Martin, his former football coach, was one of them. He said Derbin was a really good football player.
“We’ve had some really good football teams here, but in his junior and senior year he helped lead us to two state final games,” he said.
Coach Martin was also Derbin’s former math teacher.
“You know, we all have different gifts. He battled through Algebra 2 like he battled through everything in life,” he said.
Coach Martin described Derbin as a stand up kid and that’s the reason they wanted to put on a vigil for him and to honor his family who’s done so much for the community.
“They’re loved by the whole community, so it just made some sense to have something here. There’s been some great celebrations of his life other places and he spent so much time here that we wanted to do the same,” he said.
Derbin’s family, friends, former classmates, fellow police officers and more showed up to the vigil. People placed flowers by his football jersey, lit candles and talked about Derbin’s legacy, which Coach Martin explained would last a long time.
“It’s gotten harder each day because every time you talk to someone, they share so many great stories, things you didn’t even know about Jacob. How he met his fiancee, the things he did to help other people, everybody you talk to just has positive things to say. There’s not one person I’ve talked to in the last week that has any negative memory of Jacob at all,” he said.
