CLEVELAND — This Police Week, Ohio law enforcement is honoring one of their own, who was shot and killed in the line of duty Saturday.

What You Need To Know

  • Police Week is May 13 to May 20

  • Euclid officer Jacob Derbin was shot and killed on Saturday

  • His friends who served in the Army National Guard with him say he was loved by many

Police in the Cleveland suburb of Euclid were answering a disturbance call Saturday night when Derbin, was shot. He later died at the hospital.

Derbin joined Euclid Police last year and was loved by many, and his friends said he was the type of guy that could put a smile on everyone’s face.

“Being with that guy, it makes you feel invincible, because he is, he was such a big personality and any time he showed up he would light up a room and everyone would know he was there,” said Garrett Tester, Derbin’s fellow soldier in the U.S. Army National Guard.

Garrett Tester knew Derbin as well as just about anybody. The two served alongside each other and were both deployed in Kuwait before Derbin joined the Euclid Police Department last summer.

“There’s no right way to lose a friend, and I would like Jacob to be remembered not for how he lost his life but for how he lived it,” Tester said.

Tester remembers the 23-year-old as one of the most dependable soldiers he has ever met. Derbin introduced Tester to Lexi Wood, who was also a member of the guard, and now the two are engaged to be married next year.

“Big sense of humor, big heart, big smile, big laugh, big heart laugh. And it was contagious. That even if you were having a bad day, you knew that if he was present, you would forget anything that was wrong,” said Alexis Wood, Derbin’s fellow soldier in the U.S. Army National Guard.

Wood and Tester are not the only ones remembering Derbin.

Another one of his close friends remembered how proud Derbin was to become a police officer, and how much it meant to him to serve alongside his father. Derbin was engaged to his high school sweetheart, and they had plans to get married in July.

“He was always striving to not only better himself but better his situation for his family, for his fiancé, for what was going on around him because that’s who he was,” Wood said.
