AKRON, Ohio — Throughout the month, Akron officials will install 30 temporary speed tables and 40 more solar speed limit signs to help mitigate speeding in neighborhoods, according to a press release.
Additionally, there will be one permanent speed table on Maple Street.
“Speeding is consistently ranked as one of the number one concerns of Akron residents in their neighborhoods,” said Mayor Shammas Malik in press release. “This year, we are doing more than ever to tackle speeding with a total of 80 solar speed limit signs, 30 temporary speed tables, and for the first time, a permanent speed table location. We are also pursuing Federal funding for the Safe Streets 4 All Program which would further allow us to address safety concerns on Akron’s streets. Safety will always be our number one priority and addressing speeding is just one way we are tackling this concern.”
The city said the speed tables with consist of interlocking pieces made from recycled rubberized material, and will be bolted and glued to streets. The difference between speed bumps and tables is that tables have tapered ends and flat tops.
Since 2020, the city has been placing temporary speed tables in neighborhoods and has seen a reduction in speeding with an average of 3-6 mph. The city stated in a press release that it received more than 600 requests for traffic calming last year.
In addition, the 40 solar speed limit signs will also be placed in neighborhoods. The signs flash a driver's speed to remind them of the area speed limit. These signs will also collect speed data to help officials determine whether there needs to be more measures in place to reduce speeding. There are currently 40 already in place around the city.
The city said locations for the signs and tables were selected based on "resident requests, appropriateness of streets, and coordination with City Council, City departments and roadway users such as METRO RTA and Akron Public Schools."
