BEREA, Ohio — The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission is warning people about a text message scam in which the scammers make the individual believe they have unpaid toll charges.
According to the Turnpike commission’s alert, the scammers have been imitating tolling agencies across the country.
“The targeted phone numbers seem to be chosen at random and are not uniquely associated with an account or usage of toll roads,” the warning reads.
The Turnpike states that unpaid tolls are not collected via text message and that these two links are the ones associated with the Turnpike E-ZPass: www.ezpassoh.com and www.ohioturnpike.org.
The warning includes the FBI’s recommendation for those who receive this variant of a scam text:
- File a complaint with the IC3, www.ic3.gov, and be sure to include the phone number from where the text originated and the website listed in the text
- Check your account using the toll service’s legitimate website
- Contact the Ohio Turnpike’s E-ZPass customer service center at (440) 971-2222
- Delete any smishing texts received
“If you clicked any link or provided your information, take efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts,” the warning reads. “Dispute any unfamiliar charges.”
