COLUMBUS, Ohio — It was a very Merry Crewsmas for the Columbus Crew Saturday.

What You Need To Know

  • The Columbus Crew faced Atlanta United in their first regular season home match

  • The Columbus Crew won the MLS Cup Championship last season against LAFC

  • Crew fans started tailgating 9am for a 2pm kickoff

It may have been freezing cold outside, but that didn’t stop the Crew fans from supporting their favorite reigning MLS Cup champions.

It was just a couple months ago the crew was celebrating their third MLS cup win here at Lower.com field, and Saturday the celebration continued.

Fans were back tailgating and looking forward to a great season. Looking ahead, the crew has a lot of big games planned. They are hosting the English Premier League’s Aston Villa Football Club for the League Cup’s showcase and will eventually play Inter Miami CF against star player Lionel Messi.

Columbus native and crew fan Scott Gorslene has been loving the crew since their first season at Ohio State and said he looking forward to the Crew getting another cup.

“And there was a great movement to save the crew,” he said. “All the folks that did that, you know years ago, and that to bring it into this from 96, I remember going to the first season at Ohio State. We lose the games down on High stadium into the new stadium… So it’s great. It’s great to be a winner and support them and have a great team here in Columbus. And you’re selling out all the tickets, all kinds of stuff going down to Cincinnati and beating them and taking them out of the playoffs. It’s just fantastic. It’s just such a great feeling.”

FC Cincinnati’s season opener is Sunday against Toronto, and eventually the crew will face Cincinnati in their ‘Hell is Real’ rivalry in September.
