COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State University has fired its men's basketball coach, Chris Holtmann, mid-season, according to the Columbus Dispatch.
According to OSU, Associate Head Coach Jake Diebler has been appointed to interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
The move comes after Ohio State's loss to Wisconsin Tuesday night, 62-54, continuing its 17-game losing streak on the road.
Holtmann received an extension in 2022 that would have run through the 2027-28 season.
Holtmann finishes out his career with Ohio State with a 137-85 record, according to the university's statistics. He went 67-64 in Big Ten play. During his time with the Buckeyes, the team hasn't won a regular season or a tournament conference championship.
Ohio State hired Holtmann in 2017 to replace Thad Matta.
According to the Dispatch, outgoing athletic director Gene Smith and incoming athletic director Ross Bjork will search for Holtmann's replacement.
During his time, Holtman was named coach of the year a few times — once at Gardner Webbin 2013, Butler in 2017 and Ohio State in 2018. He's also a three-time Naismith coach of the year finalist.
Ohio State failed to qualify for the NCAA tournament last season. Their last appearance was in 2022, as a No. 7 seed. They took down No. 10 Loyola-Chicago in the first round before falling to No. 2 Villanova in the second round, per ESPN.
Ohio State has not won a road game in the 2023-24 season (0-7). The last road win, excluding tournament games, recorded by the Buckeyes came against Northwestern on Jan. 1, 2023.
A search for the program’s next head coach will commence at the end of this season. Ross Bjork, who will begin the athletic director role on July 1, will lead the search.
