DAYTON, Ohio — An inmate undergoing treatment at Kettering Health Dayton escaped police custody Friday afternoon and died shortly after of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a press release from the Montgomery County Sheriff.

The escaped suspect — an inmate at the Montgomery County Jail —  had been able to overpower the deputy guarding him and steal his weapon. The release notes that the Dayton Police Department found the suspect, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, within minutes of him escaping.

Medical personnel were called to the scene, but the release states the suspect was pronounced dead soon after by hospital personnel.

“The Deputy who was assaulted during the incident sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently recovering,” the release continues. “There were no Kettering Health employees or patients injured during this incident.”

The Dayton Police Department will be leading the investigation of this situation, as requested by the sheriff’s office for “transparency and accountability.”
