COLUMBUS, Ohio — Over the weekend, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced the birth of a baby mandrill, who has yet to be named.
According to the zoo's Twitter, mandrills Hasina (mom) and Mosi (dad) welcomed the newest addition on June 6. The baby is Bernard's half-sister, the zoo said.
The zoo's Congo Expedition team reported that the baby mandrill is "doing great, strong and curious about her new world."
According to the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, mandrills are a threatened species. They are related to baboons and drills. The mandrill is the largest and most colorful of the Old World Monkeys, according the Alliance.
They live mainly in the rainforests of equatorial Africa and live in small social units.
