Cincinnati earned a spot among the tournament’s final eight clubs after earning a road win over New York Red Bulls on Tuesday night. The Red Bulls scored a stoppage-time goal to tie the score at 1-1 and force overtime. But the Orange and Blue kept it scoreless for the 30-minute extra period before ultimately winning in a penalty shootout, 5-3.

The win in New Jersey was a payback of sorts for FCC. In 2017, the Red Bulls scored a stoppage-time goal at home to end Cincinnati’s miraculous run to the U.S. Open Cup semifinals. The Orange and Blue were still members of the USL at the time.

The Riverhounds took down Cincinnati’s top rival, the Columbus Crew, 1-0, in the Northeast group’s other Round of 16 matchup on Wednesday night.

FC Cincinnati is 11-4-3 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup, which has pitted the top soccer clubs in the U.S. against one another since 1913. Cincinnati has a 4-2-1 record in the tournament since joining the MLS in 2019.

While most people know them as rivals in the other football, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are no strangers on the soccer pitch either. This is their second-consecutive year meeting in the U.S. Open Cup. Cincinnati won 2-0 at TQL in the tournament’s third round. Cincinnati also defeated Pittsburgh in 2018’s Third Round, 3-1, while FC Cincinnati was still a member of the USL.

Cincinnati has never lost to the Riverhounds. FCC holds a 6-0-4 record overall, including 3-0-2 in Cincinnati.

The winner of the Cincinnati/Pittsburgh match will play either USL Championship side Birmingham Legion FC or Inter Miami CF. They'll play Wednesday, Aug. 23.

Host sites for the Open Cup semifinals and final will be determined by a draw.

The final is set for Wednesday, Sep. 27.
