CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo welcomed a new addition to its crew over the weekend: a bison calf.
The zoo said the mom bison, “Blue,” gave birth on Sunday. Within 30 minutes, the baby was standing and nursing.
Zoo officials said Blue and her baby are bonding on exhibit, and guests can see the new calf by visiting the Wilderness Trek.
Soon, the zoo will be announcing a way for the public to help name the calf.
In October 2022, Blue arrived at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo from the Minnesota Zoo with two other bison: Gun and Topaz.
Bison are the largest mammals in North America, according to the U.S. Department of the Interior. The average female bison weighs up to 1,000 pounds and can be up to 4 to 5 feet. Males can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and reach 6 feet tall.
While they can be big, they can also run pretty fast. On average, they can run up to 35 mph.
Yellowstone National Park is the only area bison have roamed freely since prehistoric times, according to the U.S. Department of the Interior. They can live up to 20-years-old.
