CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Metropolitan School District announced Tuesday morning that Warren Morgan will become the district's next CEO.
Before being selected as CEO for CMSD, Morgan was the chief academic officer for Indianapolis Public Schools. In that role, he oversaw academic policies and strategies for the district, which led to improvements in student performance in graduation rates, English, Math and other indicators, according to CMSD.
Prior to his time at Indianapolis Public Schools, he was the executive director at an education nonprofit in St. Louis. He also spent time working for President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump as a White House fellow.
Morgan also served in other roles, including as a high school principal in Chicago, and taught secondary science in St. Louis. There, he received the award Outstanding Teacher of the Year.
According to CMSD, he holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Butler University, a M.Ed. in educational administration from the University of Missouri-St Louis and an Ed.D. in urban educational leadership from the University of Illinois-Chicago.
While he grew up in Chicago, he has ties to Cleveland with some of his family already living here, according to CMSD. He also worked for the district in the early years of the Cleveland Plan, serving as the Network Leader of the investment Phase 2 schools.
He will be replacing Eric Gordon, who served as CMSD's CEO for 11 years. He stepped down at the end of the 2022-23 school year.
