COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources announced its plan to provide updates on wildflowers that are blooming and the best place to view them every Friday through middle of May.

The wildlife bloom report is categorized in south, central, and north regions.

Ohio’s first native blooming wildflower, skunk cabbage, started blooming in southern Ohio in January. It occurs in wetland habitats such as fens, seeps, swamp and woods. 

According to the ODNR, nearly a dozen native wildflowers are already in bloom in southernmost Ohio.

The wildflowers include: harbinger-of-spring, white trout-lily, purple cress, Virginia bluebells, cut-leaved toothwort early saxigrage, spring beauty, round-lobed and sharp-lobed hepaticas.

The locations to view the early bloomers include: East Fork State Park, Whipple State Nature Preserve, Ohio River Bluffs Nature Preserve owned by The Arc of Appalachia and Shawnee State Forest.
