CINCINNATI — Bengals Quarterback Joe Burrow will undergo surgery to have his appendix removed, according to RapSheet.
Burrow is expected to miss some practice time because of the surgery, according to a tweet from NFL Insider Ian Rapoport.
The news comes on the same day as the first day of training camp for the players. Wednesday is their first practice in front of fans. It's not known how long recovery will take. The team's first of three preseason games begins Aug. 12 at home against the Arizona Cardinals, and their first game is Sept. 11 against the Steelers.
This isn't Burrow's first run in with an injury; he tore his ACL that ended his season as a rookie in 2020. But he bounced back with an impressive 2021 season, leading to his nomination of the 2022 Comeback Player of the Year.
The Bengals' backup quarterback is Brandon Allen, who will likely fill in until Burrow recovers.
Burrow, 25, originally from Athens, Ohio has been with the Bengals since 2020. His current career statistics include 68.2 completed passes, 7,299 yards thrown and 47 touchdowns.
