AKRON, Ohio — The City of Akron canceled its annual Rib, White and Blue festival this weekend after protests broke out following the police shooting of Jayland Walker, 25, early Monday morning.

Around 12:30 a.m. Monday morning, authorities said police attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Walker, an Akron resident, but he drove off and fired a shot during the subsequent car chase.

Walker eventually slowed down his vehicle and jumped out as it continued to move. Officers then chased him on foot into a parking lot, where authorities said Walker created a “deadly threat” that led to officers shooting him. Paramedics were called to the scene, but authorities said they declared Walker dead at 1:03 a.m.

“I completely understand that some residents and guests will be disappointed by the decision to cancel the festival this holiday weekend. Independence Day is meant to be a celebration and a time of gathering with friends and family," Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan wrote in a statement. "Unfortunately, I feel strongly that this is not the time for a city-led celebration."

The Akron Beacon Journal reported the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has taken over the investigation into the death of Jayland Walker at the request of Akron police. Police are expected to release body camera footage in the coming days.

Demonstrators took to the streets Wednesday afternoon, congregating in front of the Akron Police Department and holding up signs that said, "Justice for Jayland."

"We know that no police officer ever wants to discharge their service weapon in the line of duty," Horrigan and police chief Steve Mylett wrote in a joint statement Wednesday. "It's a dark day for our city, for the families of those involved, as well as for the officers."

Authorities said the officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues.
