MOUNT GILEAD, Ohio — An entire Ohio village remained in the dark after Monday’s storm, with no clear sign of when the power will return.

What You Need To Know

  • The village of Mount Gilead still had no power 48 hours after being hit by a storm Monday

  • Clean-up crews worked to clean up damage from the storms

  • Nearly 6,000 customers were without power

When storms came through Ohio on Monday night, Mount Gilead resident Brian West said he lost power immediately.

He spent some of Wednesday sitting in his car trying to stay cool.

“We’re just running fans with generators,” said West. “This has been ferocious, with all the trees taken down, wirelines,” West said. “It’s taking a major clean-up crew. That’s how bad it’s been.”

Down the road, Kevin Grassel had his generator running. He and his family were out camping when the storm hit earlier in the week.

“It was intense,” said Grassel. “We were pretty freaked out. The camper was shaking, you know.”

Despite having a generator, he said he’s using it sparingly.

“No air conditioning, of course,” said Grassel. “We’re just running bare essentials, ceiling fans, a few outlets, a light if we need it.”

West said he was told the power might come back Thursday or Friday. Until then, he’s thankful for the extra help.

“There are people coming in from other counties and they’re trying to help clean up and haul stuff out and I praise those people for helping,” said West.

Mount Gilead is in Morrow County, which 48 hours after the storm still had nearly 6,000 customers without power.
